Abstract

This article presents in general terms the main existing educational paradigms, and in particular, the role that many authors assign to technology in the search for solutions to some of the limitations of learning in large groups of students. Following a description of the advantages of learning centered technology, a brief historical summary of the different theoretical frameworks applied to computer assisted language learning over the last few decades is presented. Particular attention is paid to cognitivism, constructivism, and the concept of scaffolding. Subsequently, a system is presented that represents a specific application of such theoretical and conceptual frameworks to the learning of English for specific purposes centered in the learner, which is both adaptable and personalizable. In particular, the relative roles of scaffolding and the control that the student has on his own learning process within the system are explained.
