Ithaca in Cuba: The Nationalist and Independence Project of the Catalan Immigrant Associations in Havana (1911-1932)

This article analyses the four main Catalan associations in Havana from a multifunctional perspective: charitable, cultural, economic and, above all, political. Since the first decades of the twentieth century, these associations have been dominated by political considerations, to the detriment of other objectives. Some of them defended a nationalist project, demanding greater autonomy for Catalonia, while others openly advocated a radical nationalism that would lead to independence of Spain. All of them formed a complex and interconnected network with other Catalan societies in different parts of Catalonia and in America. From 1932 onwards, they gradually lost economic and political power, leading to the dissolution of almost all of them, until they disappeared one by one.
