The purpose of this article is to analyse the development of tools to support collaborative learning environments. In our view more effort is needed to examine how the use of scaffolding, improved evaluation systems and following up on the work of students can improve the learning process. We analyse results of research in this area and describe related studies initiated at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.
