Abstract

Considering the profound interest aroused by distance education in Latin America and the Caribbean of late years, different concerns about the necessity and relevance of distance education emerge. For example, the fact that many countries do not have official regulation for this educational system neither they have official systems for the assessment and acredatation of its quality. we are presenting the study of the regulations of distance education and the quality assessment and accreditation processes according to different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Moreover the proposal for the development of such processes through the “Instituto Latinoamericano y del Caribe de Calidad en Educación Superior a Distancia” (Latin American and Caribbean Institute for Quality in Distance Higher Education) (CALED)will be presented.
